While researching the Mariana Trench in 1975, a research team is attacked by a massive prehistoric shark. Jonas Taylor, the team's sole survivor, is dismissed and shunned for his tales of a massive shark.
Suyin, Jonas' ex-wife, is leading a research team investigating the Mariana Trench in a submersible named the Mana One in 2018. A gigantic shark attacks the team as they are doing a seismic survey. The Mana One has been damaged, forcing the crew to evacuate ship.

Jonas is summoned to assist in the team's rescue. He boards a submarine and descends to the Mariana Trench's bottom. He locates the Mana One and saves the team. The gigantic shark, however, reappears and attacks the submersible. Jonas and his team must fight for their lives.
Jonas eventually dispatches the gigantic shark, and the team is rescued. Jonas is vindicated, and his allegations of a massive shark are finally taken seriously.

The movie's gigantic shark is known as a Megalodon. Megalodons were genuine sharks that existed millions of years ago. They were the world's largest sharks, reaching lengths of up to 60 feet.
The film was shot in Australia and New Zealand. The underwater shots were shot in a massive tank at Queensland, Australia's Village Roadshow Studios.
