The story is conveyed in a non-linear manner, with jumps between the three storylines. As the spectator is never sure what will happen next, this produces a sense of urgency and tension. The film also has beautiful graphics that capture the turmoil and desperation of the exodus.

Dunkirk was a critical and commercial triumph, collecting more than $532 million globally. It received plaudits for its realism, performances, and directing. Three Academy Awards were given to the picture, including Best Sound Editing, Best Sound Mixing, and Best Cinematography.
Here's a more extensive breakdown of the film's three plot lines:

Tommy: Tommy is a young British soldier who is a member of the British Expeditionary Force (BEF) that is stranded on the Dunkirk beaches. He becomes separated from his squad and attempts to flee by boat. He befriends a Scottish soldier named Gibson, and the two make their way to a British warship. The destroyer, however, is sunk by German bombers, and Tommy is the only survivor. Mr. Dawson rescues him after he swims to land.

Farrier is a Royal Air Force pilot entrusted with defending the evacuation fleet from German bombers. He's flying a Spitfire against a swarm of German fighters. He's shot down and lands in the sea. He makes it to shore and is rescued by a troop of British soldiers.

Mr. Dawson: Mr. Dawson is an English civilian who resides in Weymouth. He chooses to sail his boat to Dunkirk in order to assist in the rescue of stranded soldiers. He transports a party of British soldiers back to England.
As the evacuation comes to a conclusion, the three tales intersect. The film concludes with Winston Churchill praising the British people for their bravery and resilience.
